At Zion Builders, we understand that your home or business is an investment and that must be protected. The Nevada State Contractors Board regularly takes steps to combat unlicensed and unprofessional contractors through a statewide undercover enforcement operation. With the growing issue of unlawful advertising and unlicensed contractors operating in our area, we want to highlight why it’s crucial to hire a licensed, reliable contractor for your next project. Also, why Zion Builders, Inc. is the right choice to secure your investment.

Protecting You from Unlicensed Contractors

From October 14-25, 2024, Nevada’s State Contractors Board took part in a national enforcement operation, coordinating with other states to crack down on unlicensed contractors. This undercover operation revealed a troubling number of contractors unlawfully advertising online and attempting to bid on residential projects without proper credentials. In fact, 22 unlicensed contractors were contacted to provide bids for a fictitious project, and 59 unannounced job site visits were conducted to verify contractors' licenses.

This operation highlights the risks involved in hiring an unlicensed contractor. The risks that can range from subpar workmanship to potential legal and financial consequences. In Nevada, the law is clear: consumers must ensure their contractor is licensed to protect their interests.

Why You Should Always Verify a Contractor’s License

Hiring an unlicensed contractor can lead to major headaches. Consumers who work with licensed contractors enjoy valuable protections, including the ability to file complaints with the Nevada State Contractors Board. If something goes wrong, and the work is substandard or the contractor fails to meet their obligations, consumers have recourse through the Board’s investigative process.

One of the key protections available to consumers is the ability to file a claim for damages through the Residential Recovery Fund—up to $40,000. This helps homeowners recover money spent on subpar work, providing peace of mind during a potentially stressful situation.

In Nevada, it’s easy to verify a contractor’s license. Whether through the State Contractors Board website, mobile app, or a quick phone call, you can check a contractor is licensed before hiring them. And don’t forget: always obtain at least three bids, check references, and carefully review contract terms before signing anything.

New Laws to Prevent Fraud and Project Abandonment

To further protect consumers, Nevada recently passed a law limiting down payments on residential projects to no more than $1,000 or 10% of the total contract value. This regulation helps prevent situations where consumers make large upfront payments and the contractor fails to complete the work or abandons the project altogether.

For consumers, this is an important safeguard against fraud and financial loss. It ensures that contractors are incentivized to complete the work and that you aren’t overpaying for a project before the job is finished.
